Ethiopia, Eritrea Exchange Accusations Amid Renewed Border Tensions

(MENAFN) Eritrea has dismissed Ethiopia’s claims of military incursions and support for armed factions, labeling the accusations “false” and “deplorable.” The exchange marks another escalation in strained relations between the neighboring Horn of Africa states, amid broader disputes that include Ethiopia’s push for Red Sea access.

Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Gedion Timothewos, sent a formal letter on Saturday to his Eritrean counterpart, Osman Saleh Mohammed, alleging that Eritrean forces have been present inside Ethiopian territory for a “considerable period.” He further accused Asmara of supplying direct logistical and material assistance to militant groups.

“We have been calling for this violation of our territorial integrity and sovereignty to be rectified. These repeated calls have gone unheeded,” Timothewos wrote, asserting that the Eritrean authorities had instead “chosen the path of further escalation.”

In response, Eritrea issued a statement on Monday rejecting the allegations as “fabricated,” arguing that they are part of what it characterized as a “pattern and spiral of hostile campaigns against Eritrea for more than two years.”

“The government of Eritrea has no appetite for, or desire to, engage in meaningless acrimony to add fuel and exacerbate the situation,” the Ministry of Information in Asmara stated.

The two nations share a history of conflict. A devastating border war between 1998 and 2000 resulted in tens of thousands of deaths. Although a 2018 peace accord officially normalized relations and reopened diplomatic channels, tensions resurfaced in subsequent years. Eritrean troops later supported Ethiopian federal forces during the 2020–2022 conflict in the Tigray region.

In recent months, relations have again deteriorated. Ethiopian officials have accused Eritrea of preparing for renewed hostilities and coordinating with insurgent groups active in the northern Amhara region, allegations that Asmara firmly denies.
